Welcome & Intro

Welcome to our Blog… Here we will blog about our dogs and our activities – we hope you enjoy reading our blog and invite your comments.   Please remember raising weimaraners is a big job and they require my attention all the time so some days our blog may not get the attention it needs :)

Raising Puppies – We have learned a great deal about the development of canines.  Many scientist and behaviorist’s have published articles regarding the development of a puppy.  I read daily on how to raise great pups and eventual dogs.  I have enjoyed the information provide by Temple Grandin and her perspective on animals behaviour, she autistic which by the way I have also studied as I have cared for two autistic children.   She has two books Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human – check them out very interesting reads!  I believe that raising well adjusted puppies is the result of a “hands on”  approach – we touch puppies at birth and continue to hold and talk to them every day.  We play music for them and keep them in a central part of our home where they hear the daily noises of life.  We put wings near the whelping box at two weeks and allow the pups to play with wings of a pheasant.  At about four weeks I begin live bird exposure in a safe and fun manner for the pups.  I do everything in my power to ensure at 8 weeks you are getting a healthy well adjusted puppy.  Here’s the thing though, you must do your part to have the dog you want in the end.  That’s why my motto is raising great dogs takes a great team of Breeder/trainer – owner/trainer.  What makes a great owner/trainer is the same as the breeder/trainer a hands on approach to raising your puppy.  He must be rewarded for good behavior and bad behavior no matter how mild not tolerated.  I hope that by sharing in this blog how I raise my dogs and some ideas and tips from others we can all work toward the goal of a great dog!  Please remember there are no perfect dogs they are just like people and make mistakes but nobody’s perfect!

Kudos to any breeder who starts blogging to help their clients. I know first hand how much dedication it takes to raise the pups, take care of the adults, and handle the client needs. Then when you add a blog you add a whole different element.

Each breeder has their own experience. Each breeder has their own viewpoint. Sharing from your wealth of experience is a gift to everyone else. Happy Blogging!

    Hi there,
Wanted to give you the title of that book we discussed as I think it is super for anyone looking to bring a dog into their family. It is by The Monks of New Skeet. Title: The Art of Raising a Puppy.

I bought this book a few years ago, before we got our Weim from Doni. It’s a great book. I actually read it and took notes, never having owned my own dog. We followed the book’s puppy schedule, crate training, and potty training methods to the T and all worked perfectly. I hope you get as much out of the book as I did! Best of luck! Toni Gurney
