Well there were not many posts last week as we were outdoors enjoying the break in our weather and finally being able to run the dogs outdoors and explore the woods. We even did a little shed hunting but were not able to find any – Deer Antler Sheds are great fun for the weims to find and since the pups gnaw on antlers during teething they are pretty good at hunting them up on walks! We are back to full blown winter today with drifts over 3′ and a large blizzard last night!
We are preparing for upcoming conformation shows and have a new girl we will debut in AKC – Drehbar’s Dare to Dream Call name Dakota. She will be shown in AKc with our Bree. We are also hoping to go to the Cobo Hall show in Detroit where the Baroness Beatrix will be shown by her owner Audrey and a Junior Haylee. Our approach to showing our dogs has always been from the stand point of doing something with our dogs. We are not by any means well to do folks – quite the contrary we are just simple farmers living a simple life. The figures presented during Westminster were close to $150,000 to finish a champion in AKC and go to Westminster and that will not be within our reach. Does this mean our dogs are not entitled to show here in Michigan and have fun in the ring? No – and we have tons of respect for those who have well shown champions.
Field trials are also expensive venues when you add up the cost of travel lodging renting horses and trainers – they numbers have dropped at field trial and test venues here in Michigan – last year the VHDF held a trial and we were unable to attend – we did contact several hunters and offered to help with costs and still were unable to get the numbers up for them. With the economy still pretty much in the hole here for most Michigan folks counting pennies has become a way of life – yet we all stay for what this great State has to offer in the way of Natural Resources. I will continue to raise healthy loving family companion weimaraners with a willingness to please their owner and a hunt drive suitable to the average Midwest Upland Bird Hunter.
This year we will expand our bird brooding area and again raise quail and pheasant for training the dogs. We are also looking into building a boarding facility in the next couple years as many of you have asked us to board your family pets during your vacation times.
I enjoy my work with the wonderful weimaraner and have enjoyed the people I meet everyday through them -we are truly blessed.
